Two workers died and one was injured when soil collapsed during excavation at a construction site near the Swad Hotel in Thane's Naupada area on February 23, 2023. The event occurred at a society rebuilding site at 6:15 p.m. while a 500-meter area was being excavated to a depth of roughly 8 to 10 feet.
The workmen were pulled out of the cave-in and taken to Civil Hospital in Thane, where the doctors pronounced two of them dead. The third labourer is receiving medical attention for neck injuries.
An official from the Thane Municipal Corporation said, "We have always pledged to penalise contracting companies heavily for failing to follow safety protocols. Even though the municipality has the authority to fine these companies, worker training is still substantial. This is how the problem will be solved."
When labourers are hired, the training processes have always been delayed or they are non-existent. As a result, companies get fined and construction sites are closed.
The official mentioned that a legal framework is offered for occupational safety and health in the construction industry. Improved research and development capabilities are required in growing risk areas. Overall, there was an emphasised need for more advancement in technical manpower and an understanding of safety, health, and the environment.
To enable greater performance and monitoring, the TMC intends to offer a more extensive database. The municipality promised to do better reporting on accidents and fatalities at work.
